Europe’s cultural heritage is a rich and diverse mosaic of cultural and creative expressions, an inheritance from previous generations of Europeans and a legacy for those to come. It includes natural, built and archaeological sites, museums, monuments, artworks, historic cities, literary, musical and audiovisual works, and the knowledge, practices and traditions of European citizens.
Preservation of the European cultural heritage and its integration in the educational procedure, is of utmost importance in order for high-quality education to be delivered. i-School project contributes towards that cause, while at the same time implementing digital tools in the educational process. The creation of strong bonds and relationships between schools, cultural institutions, and other related organizations is also among the project’s main objectives.
For this reason i-SCHOOL promotes European initiatives as European Heritage Days.
The European Heritage Days is co-organised by the European Union and the Council of Europe, which launched the action in 1985. It is among the most widely celebrated participatory cultural events in Europe.
During the European Heritage Days, thousands of monuments and sites open their doors, some of them normally closed to the public for the rest of the year. This allows people to enjoy free visits, learn about their shared cultural heritage and become part of safeguarding Europe’s heritage for present and future generations.
The shared theme for this year’s European Heritage Days is Living Heritage. This refers to the practices, knowledge and skills which have been passed from one generation to the next, so sharing these with young people is essential as a way to safeguard intangible cultural heritage for future generations, as well as providing a sense of identity and continuity.
