The necessity of teaching soft skills

In a constantly changing world of work, the role of the teacher goes beyond the transmission of technical knowledge. The challenge facing the school, therefore, is to innovate educational action, enhancing the centrality of the student and increasing collaboration with the local context. The European Union has defined transversal competences as “those skills that enable citizens to act consciously in a profoundly complex social context and to meet the challenges posed by increasingly digitised and interconnected organisational models”. Today more than ever, it is crucial to develop so-called ‘soft skills’ or transversal competences in students. The school is the ideal place for teaching soft skills, as it plays an important role in socialisation processes.

Specifically, these abilities are recognised as transversal skills that it is necessary to possess in order to successfully face the world of work, study and interpersonal life.

Among the most important soft skills for teachers there are:

  • Communication skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Adaptability
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Continuous learning and professional development
